Michael Dempsey
1880–1951

Miner, Soldier, Forest Ranger, Father of Ten

Born on 10 February 1880 in Fort-Coulonge, Quebec,

Michael Joseph Dempsey was the son of Michael Dempsey and Archange Primeau, both aged 25 at the time of his birth. Raised in the rugged landscapes of Pontiac County, Michael began his working life as a miner—a fitting start for someone who would later endure the trenches of World War I.

In January 1915, at age 34, Michael enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force. He served with distinction in the 49th Battalion, known as the Edmonton Regiment, and fought in some of the war’s fiercest battles, including the Battle of Mont Sorrel. Wounded in action, he was hospitalized in England and later returned to the front, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant. On 13 June 1918, he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry in the field—one of the highest honors for non-commissioned officers.

After the war, Michael returned to Canada and married Rosalie Mercredi on 27 December 1923 in Fort Chipewyan, Alberta. Together, they raised a large family of six sons and four daughters, building a life rooted in resilience and service.

He later worked as a Forest Ranger, a role that reflected his enduring connection to Canada’s wilderness and his commitment to public service.

Michael passed away in 1951 in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, at the age of 71. His legacy lives on through his descendants and the enduring respect for his bravery and dedication.
